Phonological constraints in speech segmentation processes: investigating levels of implementation

چکیده

Recent data have been considered as evidence for a role of phonological constraints in speech segmentation processes. A distributional analysis of consonant sequences in the French lexicon shows that these results may be accounted for by lexical competition or by transitional probability models in which no claim is made about the usefulness of phonology in speech perception. Two word-spotting experiments were devised in order to investigate this issue. In the first experiment, only half of the participants showed the previous effect. In a modified replication of this study, the expected effect emerged clearly with the same target stimuli. While the role of phonotactics in speech segmentation seems to be independent from lexical competition and transitional probabilities, the likely role of strategical effects is discussed.

Phonological units in speech segmentation and phonological awareness

This paper explores the relationship between phonological units in speech segmentation and phonological awareness by investigating Japanese Brazilians living in Japan. The first experiment investigated the size of the phonological unit in speech segmentation using the Japanese materials and methodology in Otake et al. (1993). As for French subjects in the earlier study, the miss rates showed an...

Persian Phonological Awareness Tests: A Comparative Analysis

Objectives: Phonological awareness is an extensive skill for detecting, manipulating, or analyzing the components of oral language, apart from their referents. The phonological awareness consists of different levels from the simplest to the most difficult level. We considered two Persian phonological awareness tests (visual and auditory) with different subtests. This research aimed to investiga...

The role of segmentation in phonological processing: an fMRI investigation.

Phonological processes map sound information onto higher levels of language processing and provide the mechanisms by which verbal information can be temporarily stored in working memory. Despite a strong convergence of data suggesting both left lateralization and distributed encoding in the anterior and posterior perisylvian language areas, the nature and brain encoding of phonological subproce...

مقایسه فرآیند‌های واجی در کودکان دو زبانه فارس- عرب‌زبان و کودکان تک زبانه

Background and purpose: Bilingualism is a common phenomenon in many countries which could increase consonant errors in the speech produced by bilingual children. The aim of this study was to evaluate phonological skills such as occurrence proportion, and the frequency and type of phonological processes in Persian-Arabic speaking children in Ahvaz, Iran. Materials and methods: A descriptive-ana...

بررسی خطا‌های واج‌شناسی کودکان با کاشت حلزون و کم‌شنوای شدید دارای سمعک و طبیعی 6 ساله در شهر تهران

Background and purpose: Hearing improvement tools like cochlear implants and hearing aids have largely helped children with hearing loss in terms of the speech production and comprehension by providing them with auditory input. The aim of this study was to investigate the phonological skills in the six-year-old children with cochlear implants and severe hearing aids and normal hearing children....
